It’s not often that you get the opportunity to throw a party that will have a positive impact on the community, but that is exactly what happened last week. On June 23rd , the Winnipeg Jets hosted a Sportsnet Live event that brought together partners from all sectors of the community to celebrate the team’s return and to network with other organizations, businesses and individuals that share Winnipeg’s passion.

“You Never Know What’s Life-Changing” is a sports entertainment blog that’s all about the sports world, and the behind-the-scenes of the people who make it happen. From the trash talking to the tattoos, from the the interviews to the highlight videos, from the beauty of the game to the dirt of the locker room, it’s all here, with a healthy dose of humor.

This week’s guest is a man who helped transform American soccer into a global success story. After an injury cut his playing career short, he became a successful coach, watching his Borussia Dortmund team gain the Bundesliga title in 2011 and 2013, while helping U.S. national team players Jordan Morris and Christian Pulisic break onto the world stage.

At 6-foot-1 and weighing 90 pounds, New England Patriots linebacker Lawrence Guy has to consume a lot of calories to keep his body running. However, the 31-year-old is not keeping his figure by eating the kind of food that most NFL players like to eat.

By changing his eating habits early in his career, the seventh-place winner in 2011 has put himself in a position where he can make more money than anyone else for 233rd place. And if Guy’s favorite method of tanking continues to make him a force on the field, the Patriots should have an elite defense in 2021.

Lawrence Guy’s physical skills have earned him impressive salaries

Guy may have spent the first half of his NFL career as a reserve, but he made up for a slow start by becoming a reliable starting quarterback on two of the AFC’s best teams. After brief stints with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts and then the San Diego Chargers, he settled in Baltimore. In 43 games (17 starts) for the Ravens, Guy threw 74 interceptions (13 for loss), 5.5 sacks and 20 quarterback hurries.

Showing his starting skills in one of the Patriots’ biggest rivalries, he received a significant pay raise. Ironically, Bill Belichick picked a player who caused problems for his team in the trenches. On the eleventh. In March 2017, the Patriots signed Guy to a four-year, $20 million contract. After earning just $1 million his senior year in Baltimore, the talented lineman earned $5.6 million in his first season in New England.

Belichick’s decision to invest in Guy has paid off. From 2017-20, the Arizona State standout started 60 regular season games and seven postseason games for a Patriots team that won Super Bowl 53 on the strength of a dominant defense with Guy under center. Guy, who has built a reputation as a respected leader in the locker room and a versatile, dependable player, has put himself in a good position to get a new contract for spring free agency.

While he didn’t get as much money as he probably expected, the veteran quarterback did get some semblance of financial security by signing as the 30th pick. March signed a four-year, $11.5 million contract with the Patriots.

However, Guy would not have been able to continue receiving an NFL salary if he had not made a major change in his diet long before he arrived in Foxborough.

With $20.5 million in earnings in his career, it’s clear that everything Guy eats makes him a more than decent income. Although he holds a position that requires size, strength and power, he does not rely on the usual sources of protein such as steak, chicken or pork.

I used to eat so much meat I got bloated. Once I replaced the other things, the swelling went away, Guy told ESPN’s Mike Reiss. That’s why I always tell people: Don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know what can change a life.

So what is the key to success for a veteran?

Guy has been following a largely vegan diet since 2012-2013. It’s no surprise that his wife Andrea has been instrumental in guiding him down a new caloric path.

We get beat every day on this field, Guy said. Your body needs food more than ever to recover. What’s the best way to proceed? I think it’s herbs. You prolong your career in a way.

He admitted he had to change his diet when he joined the Patriots in 2017.

When I gained weight, I weighed at least 150 kg. Knowing my position and their style of play, I knew I had to add some weight, Guy explained. I’m not someone who has trouble staying at weight, but gaining weight is always a challenge. When training camp starts, I have to watch what I eat so I don’t gain weight, because I don’t want to lose anything.

The underrated quarterback should continue to play a key role in the Patriots’ vastly improveddefense.

The Patriots look to fill the team’s cafeteria with fresh, healthy vegetables as Guy continues to strengthen the middle of their defense. And if his vegan diet keeps him fresh, he should also be moving to Foxborough in the near future.

That’s bad news for an offense that will face the Patriots this season (and next).

In addition to re-contracting Guy, Belichick strengthened the front seven by adding outside midfielders Matthew Judon and Kyle Van Noy in free agency, as well as nose guard Davon Godchaux. He also drafted two prospects, defenseman Christian Barmore and defenseman Ronnie Perkins. And with Dont’a Hightower back, the Patriots should have one of the best front sevens in the league.

If this group controls the line of scrimmage as expected, they will make it much easier for New England’s talented secondary. Of course, it starts with Guy, who was a defender for four years.

If cauliflower crudités, broccoli chips and zucchini spaghetti are really important, he should fill that role for another four years.
