Mike Vanderjagt, a former Indianapolis Colts kicker, learned the hard way not to criticize Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning’s career was effectively over after that.
In the early 2000s, when Manning was quickly becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in the league, Vanderjagt was one of the best kickers in the league. Vanderjagt, on the other hand, had had enough of losing in the playoffs and chose to throw Manning under the bus. He didn’t do well with that approach.
Peyton Manning and former Colts head coach Tony Dungy have been chastised by Mike Vanderjagt.
Mike Vanderjagt had the audacity to publicly criticize both his head coach and top quarterback.
When Vanderjagt went on a Toronto-based program after the Colts’ humiliating 41-0 defeat to the New York Jets in the AFC Wild Card, he proceeded to word vomit all over the place. He implied that then-Colts head coach Tony Dungy and Manning were not the best candidates to lead Indianapolis to the Super Bowl.
According to ESPN, Vanderjagt stated at the time, “Coach Dungy is simply a mild-mannered person.” “He doesn’t get too happy, and he doesn’t get overly depressed, and I don’t believe that works either….” I believe you need a motivator, as well as a man who will get in someone’s face if they are not doing well enough.”
Vanderjagt subsequently apologized for his comments, but he’d already gone too far. At the 2003 Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Manning would provide his own magnificent response.
On live television, Manning undressed Vanderjagt.
When questioned about Vanderjagt at the 2003 Pro Bowl, Peyton Manning slammed the gas pedal hard.
The Indianapolis Colts’ star bemoaned the fact that he was being questioned about his personal life rather than being able to enjoy his Pro Bowl experience. He ridiculed Vanderjagt while praising David Akers and Adam Vinatieri, among other kickers.
“Here we are, I’m at my third Pro Bowl, I’m going to throw a touchdown to Jerry Rice, we’re honoring the Hall of Fame, and we’re talking about our stupid kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth off,” Manning said, according to ESPN.
Manning did recognize Vanderjagt as an exceptional kicker at the time, when he was the most accurate placekicker in NFL history. Nonetheless, he saw Vanderjagt as a jerk and questioned if he would be with the Colts for much longer.
Vanderjagt would stay with the Colts, but his career would quickly deteriorate. In 2003, he was selected to the All-Pro team. He became a laughingstock two years later when he missed a game-winning field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Vanderjagt only stayed in the NFL for one more season, but the Colts won the Super Bowl just after he left, with Vinatieri as their placekicker.
Meanwhile, Manning’s leadership skills, which had been questioned by his “idiot kicker,” became legendary on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Mike Vanderjagt’s claim that Peyton Manning lacked the internal drive to lead his team to the NFL championship proven to be completely false.
During the 2004 season, Manning got into an altercation with wide receiver Reggie Wayne in the midst of a game. He used to get into fights with former Colts center Jeff Saturday and other offensive line players on a regular basis.
Manning ignited a fire beneath tight end Julius Thomas as a member of the Denver Broncos, and he let opposing defensive backs know he was The Sheriff.
Manning received some bling as well. He won a Super Bowl with the Colts in 2006 and set records with the Broncos before winning a second Lombardi Trophy in 2015 thanks to Denver’s defense.
Peyton Manning’s Hall of Fame résumé is filled with record passing statistics. A deeper examination, though, reveals some Hall of Fame trash talk. Manning’s “idiot kicker” comments, for example, will be eternally linked to Vanderjagt’s career.
