Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can’t throw the ball very well, but it’s easy to forget that because he’s doing something else really well: throwing it to defenders.
Freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is well on his way to having a great college career, and while he’s certainly on his way to being an NFL-ready player, he seems to be one of the few players in college football who’s willing to take risks on his throws. According to a report from ESPN’s Chris Low, Tagovailoa threw the football at least five times in practice during the University of Alabama’s voluntary off-season minicamp, displaying his arm and touch despite the fact that the team doesn’t typically throw the ball much in practice.
The Miami Dolphins have stockpiled Tua Tagovailoa for the 2021 NFL season. By selecting the Alabama Crimson Tide QB with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the team got more chances than expected from the player returning from a serious injury. Tagovailoa’s center, however, showed less than expected from the leading contender. Sometimes the quarterback looked good, but at other times he struggled. Over the course of the season, the Dolphins’ coaching staff benched him several times in favor of newcomer Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now Fitzmagic is gone. His meager statistics tell a truer story of Hawaii’s problems in 2020. In 10 appearances, Tagovailoa has scored 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five rebounds. In 2020, he ranked first among qualified NFL QBs in several key categories. He ranks 29th in completion percentage (64.1 percent), 30th in yards per attempt (6.3) and 26th in total quarterback rating (87.1). He’s also known for not really knowing the playing schedule, which should be very, very good for his rookie season. Still, his overall talent and draft status prompted the Dolphins to make Tagovailoa the clear starter for 2021. However, they have hedged by contracting reserve Jacoby Brissett for a year.

QB summed it up by saying what every Dolphins coach and fan probably says after this performance. It’s obvious you want to be smart, he said. But if there’s a time to make mistakes, it’s now.
