Tom Brady has been candid about every aspect of the NFL season and his future, most recently when he re-affirmed his intentions to play until he turns 50. The Patriots quarterback told TheMMQB.com that the plan to play for 10-12 more seasons will continue.

Tom Brady is arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history and it’s hard to argue that he isn’t the greatest of all time. He and Peyton Manning are the only NFL quarterbacks to have ever won five Super Bowl titles. That’s just a testament to the fact that Brady has been the best quarterback for nearly two decades.

There’s a good chance you’ve heard the words “Tom Brady and I are getting married” before. You’ve also heard a lot of people say the same thing.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Tom Brady has made it clear for years that he wants to play football as long as possible.

Brady, who will play the 2021 season at age 44, is already one of the oldest starting quarterbacks in league history. But can the seven-time champion turn 50? Those looking forward to his resignation now have a legitimate answer, given by the man himself.

Tom Brady skeptical that he can still play at 50

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Tom Brady is skeptical he’ll still be playing at 50.

Brady is the longest active quarterback in the NFL and will likely retain that role for the next few seasons.

The idea that he could still be playing in the NFL at 50 is a bit unrealistic though. According to USA Today, Brady recently said that six or seven more seasons – he turns 50 in August 2027 – is a long time in the league.

Does this mean Brady will retire after the 2021 season? Well, he doesn’t want you to get your hopes up.

I always said 45 was the age I wanted to reach, and that was my goal. I’ll be 44 this year and 45 next year. I signed a two-year contract. Obviously I can play this year, and if something happens, I can play next year and see what happens then. If I want to keep playing, maybe I can. And if enough is enough, then enough is enough.

Tom Brady

This is certainly good news for ESPN and the holders of the broadcast rights to the NFL. Either way, one can only imagine how the opposing coaches and their defenders took the news.

Unless he gets injured, Brady will pass Steve DeBerg in the 2022 season to become the oldest quarterback in NFL history. DeBerg started at the age of 44 years and 279 days on the 25th. October 1998 to play for the Atlanta Falcons. Although Bears quarterback George Blanda made his final NFL pass in December 1975 at the age of 48, he spent his final seasons as a kicker.

Can Brady reasonably get through two more years without cracking up?

Even after multiple injuries and concussions identified over the years, Brady never publicly suggested that he was about to hang up his shoes.

But he’s been playing in the league long enough to know that one hard hit can change an entire career. All it takes to end the season and possibly bring him closer to retirement is for his knee to take a weird turn when Aaron Donald hits him in the third round.

Brady has always struggled with injuries, and it’s worth noting that he hasn’t missed a start due to injury since a torn ACL cost him all 11 passes in the 2008 season. The last time he missed the start of the regular season was in October 2016, when he sat out the final game of a four-game suspension related to Deflategate.

Long life is on Brady’s side, but his age is definitely not on his side. Recovering from a concussion or severe back problems at age 44 will be much more difficult than it was 20 years ago.

Buccaneers draft Kyle Trask, who could succeed Brady

Kyle Trask worked with the second team during minicamp.

Nothing lasts forever, and that thought applies to Brady’s NFL career as well. Eventually, the time will come when he and his seven (or more) Super Bowl rings will fade.

When Brady retires after the 2022 season, his potential replacement could already be on the Buccaneers’ roster. The Buccaneers have taken Florida Gators star Kyle Trask in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Trask is expected to be the Buccaneers’ third or fourth quarterback through the 2021 season. Blaine Gabbert re-signed with the team in May and will likely be Brady’s primary backup again.

In a perfect world for the Buccaneers, they wouldn’t have to worry about facing Gabbert or Trask often in the coming years. This is still Brady’s team, and he’s not retiring yet.
