Last week, Richard Sherman told Sports Illustrated that he believes he has about one more year of playing football left in him before he hangs them up. If only that were true. As it turns out, that might not be the case, according to Sherman’s agent, Neil Schwartz.
Richard Sherman has not heard from his former team since the Super Bowl, and he may well end his career without ever playing for the 49ers again. But while Sherman is no longer a 49ers player, he seems to be talking about his future.
Richard Sherman was interviewed recently by Peter King of NFL Network and discussed his future, and specifically, how he would like to end his career.Richard Sherman may have left the NFL without realizing it. The three-time First-Team All-Pro seems to be highly overrated in NFL free agency. Now claiming to have a definitive strategy in the team’s draft, Sherman’s best hope of returning for his 11th pro season is an injury to one of the starting cornerbacks after training camp begins next month.
Richard Sherman remains a big name without an NFL contract

But that doesn’t mean the players weren’t making a lot of money. These include linebacker Trent Williams, who stayed with the San Francisco 49ers for $138 million, Pittsburgh Steelers middle linebacker Brad Dupree, who went to the Tennessee Titans for $82.5 million, and New England Patriots linebacker Joe Tooney, who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for $80 million, according to Spotrac.com. Cornerbacks William Jackson (Washington football team), Shaquille Griffin (Jacksonville Jaguars), Adoree’ Jackson (New York Giants) and Ronald Darby (Denver Broncos) have agreed on contracts ranging from $30 million to $40.5 million). However, the market for 33-year-old cornerbacks, even experienced ones like Sherman, has weakened. Janoris Jenkins got $15 million over two years from the Titans, but other than Jackson, no one has a 27-year, eight-figure contract. That would indicate that Sherman overplayed his hand. It is believed that the terms of his contract are preventing teams from making a serious offer for the 33-year-old defender, writes Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Sherman’s skills seem to be deteriorating rapidly
. Sherman entered the NFL in the fifth round of the 2011 Stanford draft and played seven seasons for the Seattle Seahawks. The contract he signed in 2018 with the San Francisco 49ers was for $27.15 million over three years, which is less than his last contract (four years, $57.4 million) in Seattle, but still a significant amount. If he was trying to get something this season after missing 11 games last fall, Sherman misjudged the market. Sherman overestimated the interest, thinking more teams would show aggressive interest like they did with Jon Gruden. Before the Super Bowl, the Las Vegas Raiders coach literally mocked the then 49ers quarterback. Richard Sherman, if you’re a potential free agent, we’re looking for an alpha presence in our secondary, Gruden told him on a podcast Sherman hosted with Chris Collinsworth. Florio said some observers in the league think the 49ers will not bring Sherman back under any circumstances. Of course, there has been speculation about a reunion with the Seahawks, as the New Orleans Saints were reportedly interested in signing Sherman. Other than that, the conversation has been minimal.
Cornerback claims to follow a specific strategy
. Bloomberg News interviewed Mr. Sherman on Friday for a story on Nurosene Health Inc, described as a wellness technology company that aims to improve brain health. Mr. Sherman is a supporter and spokesman for the company, which recently listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange. When the conversation turned to football, Sherman didn’t mention any potential employers for the upcoming NFL season. Instead, he explained that he was taking a strategic approach to determining his future. I want to be in a team that is fighting for the championship, so that is what I am focusing on and I am waiting for the right opportunity, he said. If that happens, I’ll be there. Having earned $82.7 million in his career, Sherman can be picky. Still, it seems he has set a price to leave the NFL if he doesn’t lower the bar financially. Like Sportscasting on Facebook.
