The Kansas City Chiefs are a great team. A perennial top eight team, they are equal parts a run-first team and a ground attack-first team. They are a standard NFL team. They are not a high powered offense. They are not an elite defense. They are not the Patriots. They are the most boring team in the NFL.

On Wednesday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers played some of the wildest football in the NFL this season. The final score was Chiefs 31, Chargers 31, and Chiefs’ rookie Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 503 yards, seven touchdowns, and no interceptions, threw his first career interception.

He may not live there for free, but rising NFL star Justin Herbert certainly lives somewhere in Patrick Mahomes’ mind.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dethroned Mahomes in Super Bowl 55, but the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback forced the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback to stick his tongue out weeks before the start of NFL training camp.

Let’s not forget that the Chiefs didn’t make the NFL regular season in 2020, even though a 14-2 record might suggest it. Since Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City has won seven consecutive games by just 27 points. The Panthers, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints scored in the final 2:06 to make the battles seem closer than they really were, but an average margin of victory of four points per game does not indicate dominance.

Division rivals have also made things difficult for KC. The Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders went 1-1 against the Chiefs and were formidable opponents, even in the games they lost.

So the fact that the Buckeyes pulled off a dominant win in Super Bowl 55 didn’t shock us. Tampa Bay forced Mahomes into 23 turnovers and two interceptions in a 31-9 victory, denying the Chiefs their second consecutive NFL championship.

Mahomes had trouble spelling.

The Chargers finished the season 7-9 under Anthony Lynn. They chose former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their head coach, but Hebert is still their quarterback after a sensational rookie season in which he completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 31 touchdowns and caught three winning passes.

CBS analyst Tony Romo, interviewed for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament last weekend, made the case for the Chargers in the upcoming NFL season.

Mahomes, of the Chiefs, competed in the tournament and finished 50th. Place of 88 participants. During Sunday’s final, a fan yelled at Mahomes that he should watch out for Justin Herbert next year, reports USA Today.

Mahomes, normally the epitome of quick thinking – 114 touchdowns and just 65 offensive snaps in three full seasons – not only missed a return pass, but practically turned it into a pick-and-roll.

I’ll see when I think about it, was the best answer he could give. This is the right wording: I’ll believe it when I see it. If Mahomes had said it that way, it would still be weak. I just laugh at the comment or sentence: Let’s see if his sophomore curse is as good as mine – that would work much better.

Chiefs defense must take Chargers seriously

There’s no reason to believe Kansas City can’t become AFC West champions, and a third trip in a row to the Super Bowl is also likely for a team that probably still has the best talent in the AFC. Still, Herbert and the Chargers deserve the attention of Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Herbert’s first NFL start was against Kansas City in Week 2 of last fall, and it was one of his most impressive debuts in recent memory: 22 passes on 33 attempts, 311 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The Chargers lost in overtime, but that game marked the beginning of a string of seven consecutive starts of 264 yards or more for the former Oregon star.

In a Week 17 rematch that didn’t matter to the Chiefs because they were already in the first round and eligible to play at home for the AFC playoffs, Hebert accounted for 302 yards and three TDs in a 38-21 victory.

Football is still a two-player sport where no quarterback can do it alone. Nevertheless, a fan on the golf course last weekend may have been right in suggesting that the Chiefs have Herbert in mind in 2021.
