The front staff is sending a strong message to star point guard Damian Lillard that the roster will be reshaped around him. The Los Angeles Lakers’ chances of obtaining the six-time All-Star are harmed by the Blazers’ substantial moves before the deadline on Thursday.

The Trail Blazers became sellers before the trade deadline on Thursday as they limped through the 2021-22 season.
In exchange for Eric Bledsoe, Justise Winslow, Keon Johnson, and a 2025 second-round selection, Portland sent Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Los Angeles Clippers. The quick response led to the conclusion that the Clippers had defrauded the Blazers.
Powell’s big five-year, $90 million deal was removed from Portland’s books, while Covington was in the penultimate year of his contract, earning $12.9 million. Following that, the Blazers finalized the trade of CJ McCollum, Larry Nance Jr., and Tony Snell to the Pelicans in exchange for Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Didi Louzada, a protected 2022 first-round pick, and two second-round picks.
The Blazers’ first-round selection is protected between Nos. 5 and 14, and if it does not convey, it will be moved farther down the line. Aside from that, the move allows Portland to design its whole squad around Lillard. The franchise received a $20.8 million trade exception as part of the McCollum transaction, and with the increased amount of draft selections, may have up to $60 million in salary-cap room this summer.

The Blazers’ surprising actions have reverberated around the league.
Due to the ongoing interest in acquiring the great point guard, the Lakers are one of the teams that will be heavily impacted. Those internal ambitions have only grown stronger as a result of Russell Westbrook’s first season in Los Angeles.

Westbrook’s exit may be unavoidable after the 2022-23 season, but he still has the chance to show he can be a key component of a championship team. The Lakers, on the other hand, should start planning for future roster adjustments now that LeBron James’ contract is coming to an end.
Rob Pelinka, the team’s general manager, intends to make the most of James’ remaining contract, laying the stage for a hectic summer. If Westbrook exercises his $47 million player option, those efforts will have to begin with getting rid of him. Outside of James and Davis, the remainder of the squad under contract is a movable asset.
The Lakers’ 2022-23 season is far from over, but they must begin planning for the future.
