Lakers Are Stuck Facing a Stark Reality About the NBA Trade Deadline

Despite a slow start to the 2021-22 season, the Los Angeles Lakers are optimistic about a strong comeback and a return to NBA championship contention. As a result, the Lakers are expected to engage in considerable deal action before the trade deadline next month. The Lakers, on the other hand, may have to confront a dismal reality regarding their roster-movement plans.

The Los Angeles Lakers are fighting to get back into NBA championship contention.

There’s no getting around it: the Lakers have performed well below expectations.

Aside from LeBron James continuing to defy Father Time with his excellent performance, Los Angeles does not seem to be a championship candidate in the NBA. Instead, they’re battling it out for a spot in the Western Conference playoffs.

Due to the franchise’s flaws, speculation about its participation in the trading market has grown. The Lakers, on the other hand, may face a bleak reality.

The Lakers are faced with a harsh truth about the NBA trade deadline.

As the Lakers’ season progresses, the attention has shifted to possible squad changes in order to better the team.

In recent weeks, Los Angeles has reportedly engaged in many discussions to feel out the trade market for possible deals. However, during Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s NBA Today, longtime league insider Adrian Wojnarowski voiced much skepticism that the Lakers will be able to make a notable move before next month’s trade deadline.

“I believe the Lakers’ progress will have to come mostly from inside,” Wojnarowski stated. “They simply do not have tradeable assets, particularly given the scarcity of sellers in the market.” Other clubs will be able to provide better alternatives to those chosen few sellers than the Lakers will be able to.”

The Lakers’ roster composition is a significant challenge, since Talen Horton-Tucker, with his $9 million contract, seems to be the only moving element outside of their three elite players. Kendrick Nunn is paid $5 million, while the rest of the squad is on veteran minimum contracts.

Los Angeles is allegedly looking to trade DeAndre Jordan and Kent Bazemore, but there isn’t much interest. Horton-Tucker is a fascinating talent, but his third-year issues with consistency have damaged his price.

Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook has virtually become an unmovable asset due to a lack of major interest due to his offensive deficiencies mixed with his big remaining deal. This season, Westbrook earns $44.2 million and has a $47 million player option for the 2022-23 season.

The Lakers are on track for a quiet trade deadline unless things suddenly alter.

Los Angeles will have to put up with Russell Westbrook for the time being.

Over the past two weeks, it has been evident that the Lakers will have to deal with Russell Westbrook for the foreseeable future.

Los Angeles will almost certainly have no option but to continue the experiment for the remainder of the 2021-22 season. The nine-time All-Star has had trouble settling in, but the Lakers still have 38 regular-season games to determine out who they are. It’s particularly true now that Anthony Davis is expected to return in the coming weeks.

Westbrook’s numbers increased after the All-Star break, indicating that he performs better in the second half of the season. He had a triple-double last season, averaging 23.6 points, 13.1 assists, and 12.6 rebounds on 44.7 percent shooting.

The Lakers are hopeful he can finally fit into his position as a steady third-scoring option who can shine in late-game situations, despite his potential performance. Only time will tell, but Westbrook has a chance to propel Los Angeles into NBA championship contention.
