Kobe Bryant Tried to Manipulate Russell Westbrook to Create Friction With Kevin Durant

Kobe Bryant has a fervent love for the game that propelled him to the status of all-time great. With his sheer will and persistence, the former Los Angeles Lakers player was able to get an advantage over his opponents.

Bryant, on the other hand, delved into the mental side of the game in order to get a competitive edge. All of this caused the Hall of Famer to try to sway Russell Westbrook into causing internal strife with Kevin Durant.

Kobe Bryant was the anchor for Team USA in 2012.

Kobe Bryant stayed in top form as one of the league’s finest players throughout the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Despite the fact that the Lakers had just won back-to-back NBA championships two seasons before, the star guard’s performance kept them in contention. Bryant had just completed a season in which he averaged 27.9 points per game while appearing in 58 regular-season games.

The 33-year-old went into the summer expecting to emulate his hero Michael Jordan by winning his sixth title. Prior to that, he was a key member of Team USA in 2012. He averaged 12.1 points per game, leading the team to an undefeated 8-0 record and a second consecutive gold medal, which he proudly displayed in teammate Pau Gasol’s locker.

Bryant also exploited the opportunity to represent his nation for a different reason that harmed his prospects of winning the NBA championship.

In addition to being one of the best players in the game, the former Lakers star was a master at getting into the minds of opponents.

Bryant was constantly looking for a means to get an advantage over his opponents. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said on a recent episode of The WOJ Pod that he utilized the 2012 Squad USA Basketball team to get into Russell Westbrook’s brain in order to build friction with Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“Team USA was utilized by Kobe to conduct mind games,” Wojnarowski stated. “He was more concerned about those Oklahoma City thugs.” ‘Why do you keep letting KD win the scoring title?’ Kobe would say to Westbrook. You should be the scoring champion. He’d want to instill such in Westbrook’s mind in order to send him back to Oklahoma City and cause a rift. Just a smidgeon of an advantage to keep the Lakers in lead.”

The Thunder were coming off a five-game loss in the 2012 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. Westbrook and Durant emerged as the team’s two leading scorers, while James Harden, who won the Sixth Man of the Year title, was developing into a dangerous scorer off the bench.

Westbrook has just finished his second consecutive year averaging more than 20 points per game. Durant, on the other hand, had recently won his third straight scoring championship after averaging 28.0 points per game. Despite the fact that Bryant’s star forward was the Thunder’s leading scorer, he managed to get that concept into Westbrook’s head.

Bryant’s mind games may or may not have contributed to Westbrook and Durant parting up four summers later, but his probing and prodding demonstrated his cerebral approach to the game.

Russell Westbrook is having trouble adjusting to life with the Lakers.

After almost a decade, Westbrook’s professional path has led him to play for his hometown club, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He’s battled to find his feet in a Lakers jersey, and the process hasn’t been pleasant. Due to his poor shooting and decision-making, he’s sometimes been an offensive liability.

Despite the fact that his time in Los Angeles is likely to be limited to one season, he still has 23 regular-season games to make an impression. The Lakers are in a tough predicament right now, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference rankings.

Although Anthony Davis’ ankle injury is a major setback, it allows Westbrook to take on a larger offensive role. The chance is there for Westbrook to take advantage of; now it’s up to him to make the most of it.
