In a furious Twitter tirade that portrayed fans and the media as enemies, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid vehemently backed controversial teammate Ben Simmons. It was a lively discussion with some substance and lots of spice. However, when previous comments are taken into consideration, such as Embiid pointing the blame at Simmons after the Sixers’ Game 7 defeat in the Eastern Conference playoffs, the tweets seem a little illogical.

Sources told USA TODAY’s Jeff Zillgitt earlier this week that the Joel Embiid-Ben Simmons relationship was at a standstill. Embiid questioned the report’s veracity.
The 27-year-old took to Twitter early Wednesday morning to vent his frustrations. “Stop exploiting my name to promote other people’s agendas,” he said, adding, “I enjoy playing with Ben.” That tweet was just the first shot in what might have been a cavalry charge against the media.
Embiid went on to say that journalists often fabricate or twist stories for their personal gain. He then took a jab at the supporters for previously asking that he be moved.
I haven’t forgotten that I was booed two years ago and that many in Philadelphia wanted me moved. I even said something to them. Only the genuine ones didn’t, but I simply worked hard over the summer to improve since I knew I wasn’t performing to my full ability. You, too, Philly supporters, must improve.

For proof, the four-time All-Star posted a tape from a 2020 Philadelphia sports talk radio show in which the presenter mocks his body and urges the Sixers to sell him.
The whole tirade seemed to be a reference to trade rumors involving Simmons and his treatment by Sixers supporters. However, some of the wording and phrasing in the conversation made it seem as though Embiid was also taking covert jabs at Simmons, who allegedly told the Sixers that he had no desire to return to Philadelphia.
When looking at previous receipts, Embiid’s “protection” of his point guard is worthless.
Following Philly’s playoff exit, Embiid put Simmons under the bus.
Although supporters should not blame Simmons alone for the Sixers’ postseason failure, he did take center stage late in Game 7 of Philly’s conference semifinal against the Atlanta Hawks.
When Simmons collided with Hawks forward Danilo Gallinari in the post, Philadelphia was down 88-86. As he turned off Gallo, who was caught reaching for a steal, he had a wide-open path. Simmons, instead of dunking the ball, passed it to Matisse Thybulle, who was fouled at the rim.
It was surprising enough that he passed up an easy dunk. It was even more impressive to accomplish it in the closing minutes of an elimination game. When Thybulle split the free throws and the Hawks scored five consecutive points to establish a commanding lead, it became a watershed moment.
The Sixers rallied, but Simmons missed a late free throw, and Thybulle’s foul on a Kevin Huerter three-pointer effectively ended their season. Doc Rivers’ squad had been eliminated from the playoffs.
After the game, Embiid was eager to assign blame. He believes the “turning moment” occurred when Simmons declined the dunk. It’s not like the All-NBA center hadn’t battled in crucial situations during the series. In Game 5, he missed two critical free throws and missed a short-range effort that might have given the Sixers the lead late in the game.
Embiid, on the other hand, carried Philadelphia for most of the series, while Simmons’ absence had been scrutinized. As a result, following the Sixers’ Game 7 defeat, the star big man was perfectly content to assign blame and publicly declare that he doubted the team’s ability to win with the same core.
That hardly qualifies as a vote of confidence. Not at all.
The last tweet seemed to be aimed at Simmons.

Now, let’s return to Embiid’s Twitter outburst. The outspoken center had effectively torn into the media and fans, but he ended with some very stinging comments.
Embiid emphasized that he thrives on criticism, which motivates him to strive even more. “Not everyone is built like that,” the former Kansas product cautioned.
To be clear, I like criticism and being told I can’t do something. It motivates me to try even harder to disprove everyone, but not everyone is created the same way.

Embiid could have just as easily said that Simmons does not react well to criticism. In recent seasons, that has been the growing narrative around the former No. 1 overall selection. Embiid’s guarantee that he loves playing alongside the Klutch athlete would be clearly contradicted if he made an explicit statement regarding Simmons’ handling of criticism.
It’s no surprise that this sounds like a walking contradiction. While Embiid may have hoped that the Twitter thread would clear the air regarding his relationship with Simmons, his previous comments and actions have done nothing to quiet the buzz of their feud.
When Joel Embiid has played a part in Simmons’ departure, a last-ditch effort to clear the air is futile. Perhaps it is exactly what the Sixers need to go over the hump. In this instance, though, the All-Star big man’s self-righteousness is ridiculous.
