In professional sports, the entertainment factor is important. People want to come watch their favorite players compete and enjoy a good game. However, some people take it too far and have gone off-script during games by yelling at referees or other team members things like “If you play bad, people boo you.” This has made many leagues consider implementing policies that would penalize these types of actions against athletes.

When you’re a millionaire athlete paid millions to play the sport you love, you’re presumably aware that public criticism comes with the territory, particularly from fans who have never played the sport. However, for certain people, like as New York Knicks player Julius Randle, the criticism might become too much.
Randle scored a layup and then flashed a thumbs-down sign at Knicks supporters as he moved to the opposite end of the floor during a 25-point comeback victory against the Boston Celtics on Jan. 6. On Jan. 6, the Knicks trailed the Celtics by 25 points, but recovered to win 108-105 on an RJ Barrett buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
Julius Randle threw a thumbs down to Knicks fans after hitting a layup during their comeback, sprinting toward the other end of the floor.
After the game, he explained the significance of his gesture (h/t ESPN).
Randle yelled, “Shut the f*** up.”
When a reporter questioned whether it had anything to do with supporters booing the team prior to their comeback, the Kentucky product said, “You saw it.” “You witnessed what was going on out there,” says the narrator.
Randle isn’t the only New York player to express displeasure with the city’s supporters lately. Javier Báez and Francisco Lindor, both of the New York Mets, made thumbs-down signals against their home audience this summer. Both infielders afterwards expressed regret for their acts.
However, a handful of NBA superstars are baffled as to why players want fans to cheer for them while they are losing.

Julius Randle’s annoyance with Knicks fans might be related to the team’s poor performance this season, which has been received with boos.
Last season, New York shocked everyone by finishing 41-31 and reaching the playoffs. By averaging 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists, Randle was named the league’s Most Improved Player.

Yes, Randle is still the team’s star, and the Knicks have a chance to make a postseason run. But if he and his colleagues don’t improve their game soon, he may anticipate more boos.
