For Michael Strahan, the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year, the courting of the Hall of Fame was more than a new milestone for the retired New York Giants linebacker.
Michael Strahan, an NFL Hall of Fame defensive end and two-time Super Bowl winner, has been named to the Sports Illustrated 2018 Hall of Fame class. Strahan, a well-known figure in the Giants organization since their inception and a Super Bowl XLII MVP, announced on Wednesday (August 16) that he will be returning to the Giants as a vice president of football operations. This is the first time that a NFL player has been given this position.
Michael Strahan has earned a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame. He will be inducted this week and will become the first player ever to receive the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award twice in his career. Strahan, a Giants legend and former Super Bowl MVP, shares the honor with the NFL’s best in the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) award. He joins an elite group of seven other wide receivers and quarterbacks to receive the honor twice, including Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison, Cris Carter, and Randy Moss.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is not an exclusive club for a few thousand inductees, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t play an important role in the entertainment industry. The terrazzo and copper stars in the sidewalks of the Hollywood and Vine neighborhoods are a tribute to famous movie personalities, musicians and other artists, and a visit to this area is on the bucket list for millions of visitors each year.
Planning began in the mid-1950s, and work began in 1960. Burt Lancaster and Joan Woodward were among the few actors and other personalities honored by the prototypes. The first permanent star was named on the 28th in honor of director Stanley Kramer. The March 1960 set, according to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
Since Hollywood is synonymous with movies and Los Angeles has a reputation as a music mecca, it makes sense that almost all of its 2,700 stars are dedicated to people related to the arts. There are very few sports people on the Walk of Fame, and most of them (like Chuck Connors and Esther Williams) became more famous through their Hollywood careers.
However, there is now a new category of sports artists who are nominated. Strachan has received his first nomination and will be the first candidate. Given his success on talk shows and game shows, and his role at Fox Sports, Strahan is a natural candidate for the award.

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is just the latest honor for Strahan. The Associated Press named him the NFL’s best defensive player in 2001, the Football Hall of Fame selected him to the All 2000s team, and his 141.5 sacks in 15 seasons led to Strahan being inducted into the Canton Hall of Fame in 2014.
Immediately after leaving the Giants, Strahan joined broadcasting and spent fall Sundays in the Fox Sports studio crew alongside Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson. All four received a gold jacket as a symbol of their induction into the Hall of Fame.
Of the four, it is Bradshaw and Strahan who now share the added honor of a place on the Walk of Fame for their successful transition from sports to entertainment.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Bradshaw is the first NFL player to be honored with a spot on the Walk of Fame. The four-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburghers quarterback preceded Strahan and made the immediate jump to football television work after his retirement. He also appeared in television sitcoms and Hollywood films such as Cannonball Run to expand his fame beyond football.

The addition of the sports entertainer category provides new opportunities for individuals to be inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As mentioned, stars like Strahan and Bradshaw have had long and successful second careers and reached the top of their respective sports.
Others probably qualify for the same reason and could eventually get their star. Moreover, there is already precedent for recognizing great athletes who have not been successful in Hollywood, but have made an impact in the entertainment industry.
Magic Johnson got his star on the Walk of Fame in large part because he helped make professional basketball relevant on television. After years of struggling with shoddy television contracts and postponed playoff games, the NBA has seen an unprecedented popularity surge, with viewers going all out at Johnson’s game against Larry Bird.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Ali brought the look and appeal of a movie star to boxing. His TV fights and the closed-circuit fights shown in theaters were big events, not just because of the 15 rounds, but because of Ali’s showmanship and promotional flair (a credit to Howard Cosell) that preceded them.
Strachan will be in good company when his star is next to their stars.
