With Tampa Bay’s second-round draft pick this past April, the Bucs’ receiver situation was a bit of a mess. Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson are established starters, and Chris Godwin was forced into action as the Bucs’ No. 3 wide receiver last year—his first in the NFL. In spite of his limited experience, Godwin established himself as a solid receiver for a rookie. As a result, Tampa Bay’s receiving corps is still in need of new faces, and Godwin likely has a bright future in the team’s offense.

Chris Godwin has been a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since the 2017 NFL Draft. In the four years he’s been in the NFL, he’s been known for his speed. He’s the Bucs’ slot receiver, and he’s been known for his speed. And he’s used his speed to contribute to the Bucs in a number of ways. But, Godwin may not have been known for his speed in college.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Chris Godwin to a four-year, $2,535,000 contract with a signing bonus of $895,000. This is a base salary of $865,000, with a total of $4,101,000 guaranteed, including a $4,101,000 signing bonus.

Tom Brady had one of the best seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, and that was due in large part to the great receivers that were there for him. Among those big men is Chris Godwin, who qualified for the 2019 Pro Bowl with the Bucks before Brady even joined the team. But while Godwin has established himself as an elite receiver, his future with the Buccaneers is unclear. However, his recent comments could indicate that the upcoming $15.9 million season is a step toward something bigger.

Chris Godwin plays franchise tag with Bucs in 2021

. In his entire career, Godwin has only played under his rookie contract. Godwin came to the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft and received 525 yards in 2017 before catching 59 passes for 842 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018. However, Godwin had a breakout year for Tampa in 2019 and has proven to be one of the best receivers in the NFL. He eventually caught 86 passes for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games. His play, along with the consistently excellent play of Mike Evans, led to Tom Brady’s decision to play free agent the following season. Tampa Bay had a great season in 2020, making the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl for the first time since 2007. Godwin caught 65 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns in just 12 games on the year and caught 16 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs. Apparently, his play was strong enough to pay off, as his rookie contract was only $3.28 million over four years. However, in March, the former Penn State receiver received a franchise tag from the Buccaneers. In fact, he signed a one-year contract worth $15.98 million.

He said he had a mutual interest with the Buccaneers

I think it’s good that there is mutual interest on both sides ….. One of the things I’m most excited about is that I’ll be here this year….. I can be here and try to get back to my guys, he said, according to ProFootballTalk. The fact that there is mutual interest looks promising for him and the Buccaneers. This essentially suggests that Godwin is not a player who wants to move on and sign with a team where he could be the No. 1 option, and that the Buccaneers might be willing to spend money on him. But his comments also prove that the coming year could lead to a big payday for Godwin.

Chris Godwin could get a big payday with the Bucks

Godwin’s comments about his mutual interest with the Buccaneers could be a sign that his potential salary will increase. This $15.98 million season is just a step towards something bigger. If Godwin can continue to prove he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL in 2021, the Buccaneers will likely pay him to be one of those best receivers. In Godwin’s breakthrough year in 2019, he amassed the third most receiving yards in the league, behind only Michael Thomas and Julio Jones. He has even more than DeAndre Hopkins and Amari Cooper. Hopkins currently earns an average of $27.25 million per year and Jones $22 million. Cooper earns $20 million a year and Thomas is right behind him with $19.25 million. Godwin probably won’t make that much money, as Hopkins, Jones and Thomas are the three best receivers in the league. However, Spotrac estimates its market value at four years, $68.6 million, or $17.1 million per year. That’s a big jump from his rookie contract. Can the Buccaneers afford it? Tampa has about $23.4 million in Free Agency in 2022, $102.8 million in 2023, and not many players in the next few years. You have to think of something for him. With the talent he has, it’s hard to imagine they couldn’t come up with something. And since the value of his franchise will only increase in the coming years, a deal can be expected sooner than later. Godwin has a chance to play for a big salary in the next franchise year. Given the mutual interest between the Buckeyes and Buccaneers, a big 2021 could lead to a huge salary for the star pass catcher.
