The Brooklyn Nets are finally looking like the team they were supposed to be before LeBron James left for Cleveland. Caris LeVert is on a tear and he’s looking more like an MVP candidate every game — in fact, according to one report, the Cavaliers might have something other than Kyrie Irving as their best player.

The “Cleveland Cavaliers championship” is a title that the Cleveland Cavaliers have not won since 2007. Caris LeVert might be just days away from making the Cleveland Cavaliers Eastern Conference Favorites. Read more in detail here: cavs championship.

Caris LeVert Might Be Just Days Away From Making the Cleveland Cavaliers Eastern Conference Favorites

The NBA Trade Deadline is coming up in a matter of days, and fans are in for a crazy ride. Multiple clubs, particularly in the Eastern Conference, figure to be buying this year, as several contenders are within striking distance of the No. 1 seed.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of such clubs. And it seems that they are only a Caris LeVert deal away from being the East’s favorite.

Caris LeVert is being pursued by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Caris LeVert of the Indiana Pacers and the Cleveland Cavaliers have been linked for the previous two months, but with the NBA Trade Deadline approaching on Thursday, things seem to be heating up.

“The Cavaliers are trying to acquire Caris LeVert from the Pacers ahead of next week’s deadline. For a little twist, Indiana is on its way to Cleveland today for a game tomorrow,” The Athletic’s Joe Vardon tweeted on Feb. 5.

The Cavaliers are said to have been one of the busier clubs in terms of talks leading up to the deadline. They’ve been connected to Eric Gordon, LeVert, and others, according to reports.

Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio’s season-ending injuries have left the Cavs low on the perimeter. Although point guard Darius Garland is a standout, no other Cleveland guards average more than 10.6 points per game. Garland (19.8 points per game) and their big men Jarrett Allen (16.2), Evan Mobley (15.0), Lauri Markkanen (13.6), and Kevin Love provide for the bulk of their scoring (14.5).

Adding LeVert, on the other hand, would give the Cavs precisely what they need to become Eastern Conference favorites.

Caris LeVert would elevate the Cavaliers to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

The Cavaliers have already established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference. They have a 32-21 record and are just 1.5 games off of first place. Caris LeVert, on the other hand, would make them the favorites in the East.

While they currently lack a scoring threat on the perimeter, LeVert would provide them with precisely that. In each of the previous three seasons, he has averaged over 18.5 points per game, including highs of 20.2 for the Pacers and Brooklyn Nets last season. LeVert is averaging 18.7 points per game and shooting 44.7 percent from the field this season.

Since the middle of December, he’s been on fire, averaging 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game in his past 17 games. During that time, he’s shooting 46.8% from the field and 34.1 percent from beyond the arc.

But it’s not LeVert’s stats that will assist the Cavs the most; it’s his style of play. Garland is the only player on the team who can generate his own shot off the dribble on a regular basis. To a degree, big players like Mobley and Allen can, but they aren’t perimeter threats, so it’s largely close-to-the-rim or midrange jumpers.

From midrange to deep, LeVert can create space for himself with his dribble. He’d basically become the Cavs’ fourth legitimate scoring threat, making them as tough to defend as anybody in the East. All season, the Cavaliers have won because of their outstanding defense, but improving offensively would make them a more complete team and a matchup nightmare for anybody.

The Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Brooklyn Nets are the other big East challengers. If the Cavaliers can use their length (they start three big men) and athleticism to defend Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, and others while also using those same skills to beat them offensively, all five of those teams will struggle to beat the Cavaliers, who are just one hot streak away from claiming the No. 1 seed.

To put it another way, if the Cavs can get LeVert, they may be days away from being the East’s favorite.

What will it take for the Cavs to complete the deal?

The only problem with attempting to sign Caris LeVert is the amount of money it will cost the Cavs to do it.

Mike Scotto of HoopsHype revealed in January that the Pacers had a high asking price for the Michigan product, requesting a young player and a first-round selection in exchange. The Cavs have first-round choices under their control, but the young player is where things might become complicated.

Isaac Okoro, a tough defender on the perimeter, seems to be a favorite of Cleveland’s. The front staff doesn’t seem to want to let go of Collin Sexton, and Garland, Mobley, and Allen are most likely off the table as well. However, since the deadline puts pressure on desperate clubs, the Cavaliers may decide to give up more than they originally desired, or the Pacers, who are anxious to begin their rebuilding process, may just accept anything they can get.

In any case, the following few days will be exciting. And the Cavaliers might be on their way to becoming Eastern Conference favorites with just one more move.
