Cade Cunningham is an American track and field athlete, who competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He’s best known for winning the 100-meter dash at the 2015 World Youth Championships, and finished second at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. He also won a silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2015 Pan American Games.
American gymnast Cade Cunningham was a world-class athlete, until he was forced to put his career aside for a few months after sustaining serious injuries in his right leg. It was then that he made a drastic change to his diet and lifestyle, and in a very short period of time:
In 2014, Cunningham was named to the USA Olympic Committee’s Team USA because of his 17-year old achievements in the Special Olympics. He was chosen to be one of the athletes that would be going to the international competition in Greece. However, prior to the start of the competition, Cunningham was shocked to learn that the McDonald’s Corporation was providing food for athletes to eat before and after competition. Cunningham was also shocked to learn that the food was not vegan, and as a result, he changed his diet to include vegan products.
In many respects, Cade Cunningham’s physique differs from those of other NBA players. At 6-foot-7 and 220-pounds, he has the bulk of a forward, but he possesses pure point guard abilities. Magic Johnson and Luka Doncic are the most appropriate comparisons for Cunningham’s physical abilities.
The No. 1 selection in the NBA draft in 2021 feeds his body in a different way than other players in the league. He is a devout vegan who eats only plant-based foods. He described how he came to that decision on draft night.

Cade Cunningham was the top prospect on the draft boards of virtually all NBA scouts and executives. For nearly the entire basketball season, he has been the unanimous No. 1 choice. Jalen Green or Evan Mobley were rumored to be in play for Detroit before the draft, but it was always Cunningham in the end.
Cunningham’s unusual mix of size and talent is why NBA clubs wanted him so much. His 6-foot-7 size makes him a matchup nightmare as a main ballhandler and facilitator.
According to OKState.com, he led Montverde Academy to a 25-0 record and a unanimous No. 1 ranking during his final high school season. That season, he had a plus/minus rating of +30.8 and averaged 13.9 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game.
Cunningham maintained his stat-stuffing tendencies as an Oklahoma State Cowboy. The big guard averaged 20.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game on his route to earning a First Team All-American despite a strange, COVID-19-filled season on a not-so-great team.
Cunningham was a no-brainer when Detroit stepped up to the podium first in the selection because of his size, talents, and productivity.

Kendrick Perkins, an ESPN draft analyst and former athlete, questioned Cunningham about his vegan diet during his post-draft interview with the ESPN draft team.
“I was curious as to what led you to become a vegan.” Perkins enquired. “As a child, I believe it was a pretty mature thing to do in terms of diet and body care.
Cunningham replied by recounting how he became a vegan and when he decided to stick with it for the long haul:
More than anything, I believe I simply wanted to try something new for my body and see how it responded. So, after I tried it, I did it for two weeks, and we had to travel to Team USA, and then we had to go to Greece, where we were eating McDonald’s and other fast food – McDonald’s is a lot better in Greece – but we weren’t used to the cuisine there. So I began eating burgers and other foods again, and while on that vacation, I told myself, “I’m back vegan, and I’m sticking to it.”

Cunningham has maintained his plant-based diet since then. While this is relatively unusual in professional sports, an increasing number of top-level players are becoming vegetarian or vegan, like NBA great Cunningham.
Veganism is practiced by other great athletes.
Vegans follow a plant-based diet, avoiding all meat and animal products. Vegans avoid animal products such as dairy and eggs in addition to not eating beef, pig, chicken, or seafood.
Cade Cunningham isn’t the first professional athlete to convert to a plant-based diet in order to improve their performance. It is actually growing increasingly frequent among some of the world’s top athletes.
According to Business Insider, the Williams sisters, Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton, boxer David Haye, UFC fighters Nate Diaz and Abel Trujilo, and soccer players Jack Wilshire and Fabian Delph all eat a completely plant-based diet. Cunningham’s new NBA teammate, Kyrie Irving, is in the same boat.
Going vegan is now far more practical for athletes than it has ever been, thanks to advances in nutrition understanding and plant-based animal alternatives. We’ll see how well it works for Cade Cunningham and his body over the course of an 82-game NBA season.
