Cleveland Browns Quarterback Baker Mayfield drew a lot of attention in the NFL Draft. Monday Night Football’s Nick Wright thinks that he would be an upgrade to current Cleveland Brown quarterback, Mac Jones.
Nick Wright, a sports commentator on FS1, said that Baker Mayfield would be an “upgrade” over Mac Jones. Read more in detail here: browns trade rumors 2022.
Baker Mayfield’s future in the NFL is uncertain. Will he be dealt, or will the Browns be forced to release their former first-round pick? Following DeShaun Watson’s move to Cleveland, speculation is rife about where the former Heisman Trophy winner will take his next snap.
Nick Wright of Fox Sports 1 recently made headlines when he grouped Mayfield and the New England Patriots together. Despite his doubts, Wright believes the four-year veteran would be a “improvement” over Mac Jones if Bill Belichick brought him in.

Mayfield is just 26 years old, but as the No. 1 choice in the 2018 NFL Draft, he never quite lived up to the hype. He took over after the Browns went 0-16 in 2017, and he went 6-7 in 13 starts as a rookie, leading the club to a 7-8-1 record. In 2019, he went on to win six more games in a 6-10 season.
In 2020, Mayfield had a career year, leading the Browns to an 11-5 record. He threw 26 touchdown passes and just eight interceptions in his career. Mayfield and the Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 48-37 in the first round of the playoffs before losing the following week to the Kansas City Chiefs. Mayfield played with a torn labrum last season, and the Browns finished 8-9.
This offseason, the Browns decided to part ways with Mayfield. They acquired Watson, the former Houston Texans quarterback, in a trade and signed him to a five-year, $230 million contract. According to ESPN, the Browns gave up first-round selections in 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as a third-round pick in 2023 and a fourth-round pick in 2024.
The Texans also sent the Browns a fifth-round selection in 2024.
According to Nick Wright, Baker Mayfield would be a ‘improvement’ for the Patriots over Mac Jones.

Mayfield will undoubtedly have some suitors for next season, despite his career record of 29-30 in the regular season. He’s still on par with a number of NFL starting quarterbacks. Nick Wright of Fox Sports 1 recently raised some eyebrows when he said that Mayfield would be a better match for the Patriots than Jones, despite the fact that he believes it would never happen.
On First Things First, Wright remarked, “There was a moment when there were whispers the Patriots wanted to take Baker in the first round.” “The Patriots are scouting the AFC, and you know what they’ve discovered?
“They understand that the best-case scenario for Mac Jones is for him to become the ninth-best quarterback in this strong quarterback conference one day.” They should be seeking for a better position, but they won’t.”
Mayfield should keep an eye on ten clubs, according to Wright. He revealed that his No. 9 club, the Washington Commanders, had recently acquired Carson Wentz and that his No. 10 squad, the Patriots, would be divisive. Matt Ryan was also acquired by the Colts.
Mayfield, according to Wright, would be an improvement over one-third of the league’s starting quarterbacks. He didn’t just suggest Mayfield would be an improvement over Jones; he claimed he’d be a “obvious upgrade” over any of the starting quarterbacks for those ten clubs, including Jones.
Several clubs are expected to contact Mayfield, but they are unlikely to pay the asking amount.
The Browns are reportedly looking for a first-round selection for Mayfield, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. For a man who was injured a year ago and has a losing record in his career, that’s a difficult sell.
According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns have not received many phone calls from clubs interested in dealing for Mayfield. If the Browns are forced to release him, she believes the Steelers would be fast to snap him up.
“I realized by Thursday that Baker Mayfield’s phone wasn’t ringing off the hook, and that this was going to be a bit hard,” Cabot remarked on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast. “I heard today that if the Steelers cut Baker Mayfield, the Steelers would pounce.” They’d be there in a flash to seize him.
“I’m sure a lot of people would agree with you. If you can get him for free and the Browns have to eat the money, I’m sure someone will take him.”
