The basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley once thought he could “whoop” Tiger Woods in a round of golf. And while it’s true that Barkley never meant to hurt anybody, he did—literally—and he paid the price.
One of the most popular and famous sports figures in the world is a golfer named Tiger Woods. Woods is known for his superhuman skill on the golf course … But Woods apparently thought he could get away with cheating too.
Charles Barkley once thought he could “Whoop” Tiger Woods in a round of golf and literally paid the price.
Whether you remember his playing career or only know his television work, there is no doubt that Charles Barkley is not afraid to speak his mind. While these are generally basketball-based opinions, Chuck can talk about many things on just about any topic. Take his golfing skills, for example.Barkley may not be the best golfer, but he is confident in his abilities. He once decided to outdo Tiger Woods in golf and even bet on himself. Not surprisingly, things did not go as Sir Charles had planned.
Charles Barkley had big problems with his Golf
.
In his time on the field, Barkley has shown that he is a capable athlete and has a lot of talent. But when it comes to his golf game, things are a little more complicated.
The story goes that Barkley enjoyed playing golf during his NBA career and at one point had a pretty good swing. However, things got worse for him after he was sold to Phoenix. In golfers’ paradise, Chuck felt he needed to improve his game. Soon he was taking lessons and asking for advice on how to refine his swing.
Instead, the opposite has happened.
Over time, Barkley’s swing evolved into a bizarre combination of elements based on countless tips. For example, the suggestion to take a short break at the top of the backend turned into an ugly hiccup. As the situation worsened, the attacker asked for more advice, which only made the situation worse.
There are so many voices in my brain, Barkley once explained on GOLF’s subpar podcast. But whatever was going on in his head, it seemed that his confidence remained unshaken.
Sir Charles once bet on himself to beat Tiger Woods at golf

To be fair, Sir Charles has rebuilt his golf game and returned to its near original form. But even when he was struggling on the field, he still believed he could play with anyone, even Tiger Woods.
We’re in Vegas, we’re having fun, and the next morning we have to play golf. Me and Tiger, and you know Tiger never misses a workout, former NFL receiver Roy Green told The Athletic in a 2020 article. We got there, and Charles said: I think I’m really going to go wild this time. I said: I just want to know the bet, Chucky, because I’m betting on Tiger. said Charles : Okay, I take Tiger five aside, but Tiger has to give me a hole and two on the par 5s. I am: Yeah, I’ll take one too.
While it’s not clear how much he bet – five per side could mean between $5,000 and $500,000, presumably per side of the track – the message came through loud and clear. Barkley thought he could beat Woods with a few more shots in the back pocket.
Believe it or not, Barkley became even more confident after Woods missed his shot on the first hole. And while this inspired Chuck to call Tiger a damn overrated guy, Green was not complacent. He doubled and Barkley quickly agreed to follow.
Once the group reached the second hole, normal operations resumed. Tiger started playing like a PGA star and Barkley took his portfolio.
Of course, Tiger made five birdies after that hole, Green recalled. I said: Chucky, you can redeem yourself now, or we can play in the back. He said: I’ll do the bidding.
Charles Barkley is no stranger to big bets
.
While it’s unclear how much money Sir Charles had to spend that day, it’s not uncommon for the former NBA star to make potentially expensive bets. Barkley is pretty open about his gambling addiction, and we know he has won and lost many bets.
According to a 2007 article in the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Barkley said he won $700,000 over a weekend in Las Vegas and lost $2.5 million on another undisclosed occasion. The article also mentions a 2006 interview in which the former striker estimates that he has lost about $10 million over the years.
It’s a stupid, bad habit. I have a problem, Barkley said. But the problem is, if you can’t afford it. I can afford to play. I love to play and I won’t stop.
Anyway, Sir Charles is not one to take risks or play it safe.
