Fans of the NBA will watch as the NBA Draft takes place, which will be the first time the draft is held outside of New York City. This move has gone over surprisingly well with fans; people like the fact that they will get to see the draft live in their own backyard. This is a big deal for the NBA since they are trying to expand their fan base. The NBA is trying to bring their fans from all over the country, and to do that they are making sure that their fans can see the draft in their own home. Some of the biggest stars in the draft are likely to be selected this year. Time will tell who will make an impact on the NBA.

The NBA Draft is right around the corner and there are a few interesting stories to watch out for.

The NBA Draft came and went today, and as usual, there was a lot going on, from who was drafted where to who overheard everything said in the draft room. Here are five things that stuck out to me as I watched the draft:

The NBA Draft for 2021 will take place on July 29, a month later than normal. If the experts are right, this year’s draft class is one of the deepest in recent memory. The The Pistons are a basketball team based in Detroit, Michigan are widely expected to choose Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham with the first overall selection.

USC center Evan Mobley, Gonzaga guard Jalen Suggs, Florida State forward Scottie Barnes, and the fascinating Jalen Green, who played last season with the Ignite in the NBA G-League, are among the other top possibilities.

The NBA draft is seldom short on drama, with deals often upsetting the proceedings. Not to mention the possibility of a surprise selection. As if that weren’t enough, such shocks operate both ways, with some players rising higher than anticipated and others plummeting like an anchor down the draft board. On rare occasions, there will be a player about whom no one knows anything. On NBA draft night, here are five things to keep an eye on.

3. Expect to see NBA draft choices exchanged.

There were nine pick swaps in the 2020 NBA Draft, which was conducted virtually. In a three-team trade involving the Thunder, Timberwolves, and Knicks, four first-round draft choices were traded. The Luka Doni-for-Trae Young trade in 2018 was one of the most important draft-day deals in recent memory.

Several Hall of Fame players have also been moved on the day or night of their selection. Scottie Pippen, Chris Webber, Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, and Bill Russell are just a few examples. When Dirk Nowitzki becomes eligible for induction, he will join that group.

Because of the NBA’s restrictions on draft-night trades, the transactions result in another NBA draft phenomena.

2. Players with the incorrect headgear

There were 12 trades completed on draft night the previous time the NBA draft was broadcast live, in 2019. However, due to NBA salary limit regulations, draft-night trades aren’t finalized until after the start of the next league year. As a result, one of the most vexing aspects of the draft is when players are forced to wear the incorrect team’s hat. Doni in a Hawks hat, Young in a Mavericks cap, and so on have all benefited from it.

As a consequence, fans grimace every year, and social media erupts with anger (which basically means it’s a day that ends in the letter “y”). De’Andre Hunter’s predicament in 2019 was maybe the most ridiculous. He was given a Lakers hat by someone. The Lakers, on the other hand, had traded the selection to the Pelicans. The Pelicans, on the other hand, had sent the pick to the Hawks. So, after he took off his hat, he was wearing the incorrect one – bad optics, to say the least.

Cade Cunningham has a bright future. Before he plays in a Summer League game, he isn’t a potential Hall of Famer. Someone will, however, make that assertion someplace. In the same vein, certain players will be chosen too early for some and too late for others. In other words, the same player may be the topic of real-time debates over whether he was a reach or a steal.

That’s one of the reasons why NBA draft night may be a lot of different things, but it’s never boring.

NBA.com and Basketball Reference provided information on previous drafts.

Only five of the top five NBA draft picks from 2008 or later have won a championship, all of them with LeBron James.
