The Milwaukee Bucks have fallen to the Brooklyn Nets in Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs. The Bucks, who were the third seed in the Eastern Conference, have been eliminated by the number six seed, and will play the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. It is the second consecutive year that the Bucks have been eliminated in the first round.

The Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday night at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets in Game 6. While the Bucks were the better team through the first five games of the series, the Nets have proven that they can prevail in a seven-game series, and they did so, as they went on to win Game 6, doing so in overtime.

The Milwaukee Bucks’ season is over. The Nets are the NBA’s best team and have a chance to sweep the Bucks, who have a young roster, and then take the series in Brooklyn. With the season over, the Bucks will look to make a change in their coaching staff. Budenholzer has been a great coach for the Bucks, but there will probably be a new voice in charge of the team next season. Here are a few candidates to replace Budenholzer:

For the third game in a row, the Milwaukee Bucks were able to lean on Giannis Antitokounmpo for a dominant victory in the first round of the NBA playoffs. But as bad as the Bucks were last season in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Miami Heat, at least they were competitive in every game. In Game 2 against the Brooklyn Nets, Mike Budenholzer’s team simply did nothing more. The Nets and their Big Three minus one took the lead and never looked back. Is Budenholzer a problem? The Bucks have the best record in the NBA at 162-65 in the last three regular seasons. But they still won’t make the playoffs. As the No. 1 seed in the East in 2019, Milwaukee led the series at home against the Toronto Raptors 2-0. The Bucks then lost their next four games. First in the East and on the playoff bubble for 2020, they lost 3-0 to the fifth-seeded Heat and have now lost five games. For weeks, there has been speculation that another playoff exit could lead to a coach change in Beer City. The Bucs wasted four years of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s heyday with the tactically limited Jason Kidd and then Budenholzer.

Why did the Milwaukee Bucks stumble in the playoffs under Budenholzer?

. With Mike Budenholzer as coach, the Milwaukee Bucks went 19-12 in the postseason. However, the loss against Brooklyn would be the first time in that span that a higher-ranked team has beaten the Bucks. But is Budenholzer the problem? Milwaukee was among the top five offensive teams in 2020-21, averaging 116.5 points per 100 possessions. It’s no surprise that figure dropped to 109.2 in the playoffs. But in the first two games against the Nets, the offense has scored a shocking 97.0 points per 100 possessions.

Brooklyn is taking advantage of a known leak in Milwaukee

This led to Giannis Antetokounmpo working in isolation against an already formed defense, while four other players found comfortable spots on the floor to stand and watch. It also doesn’t help that the Bucks can’t get into the ocean by throwing a rock on the beach. In the series with Brooklyn, Milwaukee is shooting just 24.6% from 3-point range. But at least they didn’t try to get in the ring for the entire first 15 minutes of the second match, so good for them. Add to that Budenholzer’s refusal to shorten the rotation at key moments in the game, and you have a situation where a talented Bucks team once again looks like it got the nod in the playoffs.

Who will the Milwaukee Bucks turn to after another disappointing performance?

. Giannis Antitokounmpo signed a five-year, $228 Super Max contract in December 2020, so he runs through 2024-25. He also has a $51.9 million option for 2025-26 (wouldn’t we all love to have such options?). You don’t have much room to maneuver. Chris Middleton and Jrue Holiday have big contracts. So we need to find a coach who wants to win now. That could rule out some assistant coach candidates like Brooklyn’s Ime Udoka, San Antonio’s Becky Hammon or the Bucks’ Darwin Hamm. The Nets have relied on newcomer Steve Nash, and it’s working well so far. Three candidates could be interesting options in Milwaukee.

  • Terry Stotts: Stotts and the Portland Trail Blazers have parted ways after nine seasons. This was Stotts’ third stint as an NBA head coach, and the first in which he was successful. Stotts won the championship as an assistant in Dallas in 2011. He is also associated with Milwaukee, where he was an assistant from 1998-2002 and head coach from 2005-2007.
  • Dave Joerger: He had some success with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2013-16. In his three years with the Sacramento Kings, the team has improved each season. He currently works as an assistant for the 76ers.
  • Mike Brown: Brown led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007. He was also a great backup to Steve Kerr on the Warriors’ 2017 NBA Finals team. He has the experience and brings the rings to help.

The wild card could be Sam Cassell, who, like Joerger, was an assistant in Philadelphia. As a player, Cassell won three NBA titles. Cassell has been an assistant coach since he stopped playing. He was a fan when he was with the Bucks from 1999-2003. He’s never had a head coaching job, but maybe he should have. statistics provided by Basketball Reference and COMPARED TO: In Giannis Antetokounmpo’s house, the rule is no basketball talkAfter the Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs, their coach was fired and their general manager was fired. The Bucks are still in the process of deciding what to do with their head coaching and GM positions. Some have mentioned that the Bucks should look at a guy like Kenny Atkinson, who is currently the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, or Brad Stevens, the head coach of the Boston Celtics. In the end, the Bucks decided to go with a young guy who just finished his first season as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Mike Budenholzer..
